The Ayurvedic head massage, also known as an Indian head massage, is based on the traditional system of medicine known as Ayurveda, which has been practiced in India for over three thousand years. The word “Ayurveda” comes from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, and means “science of life” or “knowledge of life”. Ayurveda is a complete healing system, possibly the oldest in the world, which teaches a truly holistic approach, concentrating on a balance of mind, body, and spirit to promote physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being.
Specifically, the Ayurvedic/ Indian head massage involves the application of exotic oils and herbs to the hair and scalp to soothe, massage, and condition for general relaxation and therapeutic effect. The oils are generally left in for a period of from a few hours to as long as twenty-four (24) hours before being shampooed from the hair and scalp. In addition to treating the scalp and hair, this procedure is also effective in treating the face, neck, shoulders, and upper back. These are all areas where one tends to harbor a great deal of tension and discomfort, perhaps arising from poor posture, an accumulation of emotional stress, or various physical stressors. In addition to stimulating deep, relaxed breathing, the procedure is effective in relieving taut, uncomfortable muscles, easing stiffness, stimulating blood circulation, and eliminating toxins to relieve headaches, eye strain, and general muscle/ joint aches and pains.
